World Champions Germany Beat Italy 6-5 On Penalties To Qualify For Semi Final
World champions Germany qualified for the semi-finals of EURO 2016 after their 6-5 penalty shootout win over long-term nemesis Italy, ending their winless run against the Azzurris at a major tournament.
Both sides played out a goalless draw in the first half of normal time but that soon changed after Arsenal play-maker Mesut Ozil gave Germany the lead in the 65th minute before defender Jerome Boateng’s moment of madness in the box was punished thirteen minutes later as Leonardo Bonucci leveled the scores for Antonio Conte’s side from the penalty spot.
Germany however had the last laugh during the penalty shootout winning 6-5 to end the long-running voodoo of not winning against the Italians at a major tournament. The world champions will next face either hosts France or Iceland on Thursday in the second semi-final.
