FA Cup: Ola Aina’s Goal Lifts Hull At Blackburn
English-born Super Eagles right back, Ola Aina emerged the hero after scoring the only goal that gave Hull City 0-1 away win to League One side Blackburn Rovers in their Emirates FA Cup Third Round win at the Ewood Park on Saturday.
The Tigers made it through to the fourth round, with Aina’s goal, the first of his senior career, which was enough to send Nigel Adkins’ side through and inflict Blackburn’s first defeat since mid-October.
Adkins made four changes to his side as David Marshall, Max Clark, Evandro and Adama Diomande were all handed starts with Allan McGregor, Michael Dawson, Jackson Irvine and Nouha Dicko making way. Marshall captained the side on his first appearances of the season.
McGregor, Irvine and Dicko featured on a bench which also included David Meyler on his return from injury, whilst there was a place for young winger Tyler Hamilton too. Former Tiger Corry Evans started for Rovers, with Danny Graham amongst the substitutes.
The home side created the first chance of the afternoon with Craig Conway curling a shot over the bar in the second minute before Paul Caddis fired a shot against Marshall’s crossbar with 11 minutes gone.
Aina and Jon Toral, the Tigers’ right-sided combination, both picked up knocks early on but were able to run them off before Michael Hector brought a save out of Rovers’ goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler with a header from Toral’s corner.
Diomande saw a low effort blocked as the away side began to look more threatening with Jarrod Bowen dragging a low shot wide after some promising work on the edge of the Blackburn box.
Derrick Williams and Willem Tomlinson were both booked for Rovers following challenges on Diomande and Evandro respectively as what had become a scrappy first half came to an end.
