UEL: United Secure Away Draw In Round Of 16 Clash
UEFA Europa League (UEL) favourites Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw with their Russian opponents FC Rostov in the first leg of their round of 16 clash.
Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave the away side the lead ten minutes before the end of first half but FC Rostov battled back after the interval through Aleksandr Bukharov’s 53rd minute strike.
Both sides missed out on decent opportunities to extend their lead to play out an entertaining score draw. Manchester United would be overwhelming favourites ahead of the second leg slated for Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Old Trafford.
Elsewhere in all German clash, Borussia will take a crucial away goal into next Thursday’s second leg after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw at FC Schalke 04 in the UEFA Europa League last 16. Jonas Hofmann’s first goal for the club put the Foals in front, but Guido Burgstaller’s strike made sure the tie remains delicately poised.
54,500 fans watched on at a sold-out Veltins-Arena as the game began at a high tempo, with both sides looking to get on the front foot. Schalke looked slightly more dangerous going forward, but it was the Fohlenelf who took the lead after only 15 minutes.
A pass from Lars Stindl cut straight through the Royal Blue defence and sent Jonas Hofmann on his way, and the 24-year-old kept his cool to slot the ball past Ralf Fährmann to finally score not only his first Gladbach goal, but his first in European competitions as well.
However, it was a short-lived lead for the away side, as Schalke struck back through Guido Burgstaller’s low finish just ten minutes later. Hofmann and Stindl both had chances to restore Borussia’s lead in the first half, but they met their match in Fährmann.
His opposite number would also go on to become a thorn in Schalke’s side; we got a first glimpse of Yann Sommer’s quality when he brilliantly tipped a Johannes Geis free kick wide of the mark at full stretch just before the half-time whistle.
