UCL: Tottenham Beat Real Madrid To Reach Round Of 16 As Liverpool, City Secure Vital Wins

Tottenham stunned Champions League holders Real Madrid with two goals from Dele Alli and another from Christian Eriksen, with Cristiano Ronaldo adding a consolation goal, as the game ended 3-1 at Wembley on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been in superb form in Europe this season despite being placed in a tough group along with Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia.

Spurs opened their campaign with a fine 3-1 win against Dortmund at Wembley on 13 September, and followed that up with a 3-0 away win at APOEL courtesy of a Harry Kane hat-trick.

Pochettino’s men then earned a creditable 1-1 draw against Zinedine Zidane’s Real at the Bernabeu, with Kane going close late on to sealing a shock victory in the Spanish capital.

Liverpool had to wait for almost 50 minutes before breaking the deadlock against Maribor as they ran out 3-0 winners on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had hammered the Slovenian side 7-0 last month but there was to be no repeat of that Champions League score at Anfield in the return game.

After a frustrating first half which saw the hosts manage 78% possession they finally opened the scoring through Mohamed Salah (49), who flicked home Trent Alexander Arnold’s driven, low cross into the box.

James Milner had the chance to double the hosts’ lead with a penalty after Roberto Firmino was fouled in the box, but his effort was tipped against the post by goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic.

Milner did go some way to redeeming himself though with a lovely one-two with Emre Can, which the German dispatched with aplomb on 64 minutes. And sub Daniel Sturridge wrapped up the scoring on 90 minutes to make it 3-0 after controlling a cross on his thigh before drilling home.

In another encounter in Italy, Manchester City came out on top in a thrilling 4-2 win against Napoli in Champions League Group F on Wednesday that qualifies them for the round of 16.

Maurizio Sarri’s high-pressing Serie A side had the better of possession early, but Man City were able to soak up the pressure and play the ball out of the back and hit Napoli on the counter-attack, making for an entertaining opening 20 minutes in which neither team fashioned any real chances.
