Marcelo’s Late Strike Lifts Real Madrid Against Valencia
Brazilian left-back Marcelo was the hero for Real Madrid as his late strike propelled the Los Merengues to the summit of the Spanish La Liga with a 2-1 win over Valencia at the Estadio Santiago Bernebeu.
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo gave the home side a first half lead for his 20th league goal of the season, and could have taken his overall goal tally to 33 this season in the second half but his penalty was saved by renowned spot kick stopper Diego Alves.
Former Real Madrid player and Valencia captain Dani Parejo gave fans of the European champions a brief scare after he produced a sumptuous free-kick with eight minutes but Marcelo struck in the 87th minute to give Zinedine Zidane’s team the three points at stake.
The win takes Real Madrid to 81 points ahead of former leaders Barcelona (78 points), who could go back to the summit with a win against Espanyol.
