Higuain Double Helps Juventus Edge Closer To UCL Final
Gonzalo Higuain scored two decisive goals to hand Juventus the advantage in their Champions League semi-final first leg with Monaco, Stade Louis II, Monaco on Wednesday.
Gianluigi Buffon kept Monaco at bay early on, twice denying 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe from opening the scoring. The Argentinian netted the ball in the 29th and 58th minutes to give Leonardo Jardim’s side a massive task in the return leg in Turin next Tuesday.
His goals also set up a likely showdown with Real Madrid after Cristiano Ronaldo inspired a 3-0 crushing of Atletico Madrid in their semi-final, first leg on Tuesday night. But Higuain was denied the chance to copy Ronaldo’s hat-trick when he was subbed by on-loan Chelsea winger Juan Cuadrado for the last 15 minutes.
Alves turned provider once more after the break as his pinpoint cross was squeezed in by Higuain inside the six-yard area. There was time for more Buffon heroics late on, with the Juve ‘keeper superbly tipping away Valere Germain’s header in the dying minutes.
Meanwhile, Gianluigi “Gigi” Buffon has maintained six consecutive clean sheets in the UEFA Champions League for Juventus.
