European Champions: Portugal Upset Hosts France To Win Euro 2016
Portugal sealed their first ever major tournament following a surprising 1-0 win over hosts and favourites France after extra time in the final of EURO 2016.
Fernando Santos’ side were initially dealt a big blow after skipper and star man Cristiano Ronaldo was stretchered after just 25 minutes before being replaced by winger Ricardo Quaresma. France dominated proceedings from start to finish and came close through substitute Pierre Andre Gignac, who struck the inside of the post on the stroke of full-time.
Substitute Eder however shocked France and the French fans as his long range strike in the 109th minute swept past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for the only goal of the game. The win represents Portugal’s first ever win at a major tournament erasing the painful memories of losing the 2004 final to Greece at home.
Meanwhile, after the superlative performance, Portugal’s Pepe was adjudged man-of-the-match in the final game following his role in the defence for Portugal.
