EPL: Moses Missing As Burnley Stun Nine-Man Chelsea At Stamford Bridge, Rooney Scores On Everton Return
Super Eagles star, Victor Moses was missing in action as Chelsea got off to the worst possible defence of their Premier League title falling 2-3 to Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Manager Antonio Conte made a big call, handing 20-year-old striker Jeremie Boga his debut with £60 million-man Alvaro Morata on the bench. But the youngster’s debut lasted only 18 minutes as captain Gary Cahill was sent off for a studs-up challenge and he was replaced soon after.
Burnley made their advantage count as Sam Vokes netted either side of a strike from Stephen Ward and though Morata came off the bench to reduce the arrears, Cesc Fabregas was later sent off to take the Blues down to nine. David Luiz’s smooth finish set up a tense finale but Chelsea could not find the final goal to salvage a draw and fell to defeat.
Elsewhere at the Goodison Park, Wayne Rooney marked his second Premier League return debut for Everton with a powerful header to give his side the much needed victory against Stoke City.
The game marked a perfect way for Rooney, playing up front, to announce his return after a 13-year spell at Manchester United. The former England captain ghosted in at the back post to head Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s centre past Jack Butland with 44 minutes gone.
