Done Deal: Dortmund Unveil Swiss-Nigerian Defender Akanji, Gets Jersey No 16
German club, Borussia Dortmund have unveiled Swiss-Nigerian defender, Manuel Obafemi Akanji after signing a contract with the eight-time German champions until June 30, 2022 on Monday.
Dortmund agreed with FC Basel on immediate transfer for the 22-year-old defender, who has been handed jersey number 16. According to Dortmund Sporting Director Michael Zorc, Akanji, who was born to a Nigerian father and Swiss mother is happy joining the club.
“Manuel has been targeting several European top clubs with his performances, and we are happy that he has chosen us,” said Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.
“He has proven in the national team and in the Champions League that he can play at the highest European level. Nevertheless, we see him as a defender, who has further development potential. ”
Akanji played in the past two and a half years for FC Basel, with whom he won the 2016 Swiss Cup and in 2017 the “Double”. He scored five goals in 42 first division games. For Switzerland, the 1.87-meter center-back has played so far four A-internationals.

Akanji made two appearances for the Switzerland U-20 national team. He made his debut in the Switzerland national football team in the 2-0 win against Faroe Islands in the World Cup qualification match on 9 June 2017.
