CAFCL: Rivers Utd Secure Huge First Leg Lead Against Al-Merreikh, As Rangers Suffer 4-1 Defeat To Zamalek
CAF Champions League (CAFCL) representatives Rivers United have moved closer to the group stage of the competition after they defeated visitors Al-Merreikh of Sudan 3-0 in the first leg of the first round clash played at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
However, Nigeria’s second representative Enugu Rangers have a big mountain to climb after they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Egyptian giants SC Zamalek in the first leg of their first round clash.
The 2016 CAF Champions League (CAFCL) finalists raced into a 3-0 first leg lead with Nigerian forward Stanley Ohawuchi getting the opener. The hosts increased their lead to 4-0 in the opening minutes of the second half, but Rangers gave themselves a fighting chance following Bobby Clement’s fantastic finish in the closing stages of the game.
Nigeria’s champion Rangers will have to scored at least three goals without conceding against their Egyptian opponents in the second leg slated for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday, February 19, 2017 to qualify for the group stage of the competition.
