C Ronaldo & Messi Knocked Out Of World Cup At Round 16
The two best footballers in the world, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo are out of the 2018 World Cup in Russia after their respective team, Argentina and Portugal were sent packing from the tournament.
France eliminated Argentina in a thrilling way and Uruguay came out victorious over Portugal in a dramatic match.
A mouthwatering match would have been on the deck had Argentina and Portugal scaled through to the next round of the competition as both players would be facing each other in the quarter-final.
France took the lead through a penalty which Antoine Griezmann calmly converted before Angel Di Maria leveled the scoreline just before halftime.
At the beginning of play in second half, Argentina was rewarded as Gabriel Mercado guided home Lionel Messi’s shot to put Argentina ahead in the contest.
It was not to stay for long as a well-hit volley from Benjamin Pavard found the back of the net to put France back into the game.
Mbappe then took over the show scoring two goals in 4 minutes to give France a comfortable lead.
Sergio Aguero scored the third goal for Argentina but there was no time for another goal.
Ronaldo also missed his opportunity to shine as Uruguay outplayed Portugal to progress to the next phase of the tournament. Edinson Cavani stole the show, netting the two goals that knocked Ronaldo and his team out of the tournament.
Cavani opened the scoring in the 7th minute heading home a well-kicked cross from Luis Suarez.
Portugal equalized through Pepe in the 55th minute but Cavani scored his second of the night to condemn the Portuguese team to a defeat.
France will next face Uruguay in the Quater Final of the tournament as the two best players are sent home from the tournament.
