Breaking: Plateau United Crowned New NPFL Champions; Enyimba , MFM Get Continental Tickets As 3SC, ABS Relegated
Plateau United FC completed their fairytale feat in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) following their 2-0 win against immediate past champions in final match-day of the season at the Rwang Pam Stadium on Saturday.
Emeka Umeh opened scoring for the Kennedy Boboye tutored team in the 25th minute, Benjamin Turba doubled the lead in the 88th minute to give them the league title in the recently concluded season. Plateau United has been consistent all through the season, winning few matches away from home in addition to winning their home games when it really mattered.
Elsewhere at the Maiduguri Stadium in Borno, Mountain of Fire and Miracles lost the opportunity of winning the league, losing 2-1 away to El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri. Ibrahim Babangida put the home team in front six minutes into the game. Akwa United defeated Kano Pillars 3-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Abia Warriors went on rampage by defeating Rivers United 4-1 at the Umuahia Township Stadium to finally escape relegation. Enyimba picked the CAF Confederation Cup ticket after defeating visiting Katsina United FC 1-0 at the UJ Esuene Stadium to finnish third on the table.
Niger Tornadoes compounded the worries of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) in Lokoja as the Oluyole Warriors failed to beat the relegation hurdle in the final match-day of the league. Babawo Ibrahim and Ebenezer Odeyemi were the scorers as Tornadoes defeated 3SC 2-0. End of the road as the Ibadan club will have to compete in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season.
Other teams that got relegated are Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC, after losing 2-1 to Nasarawa United at the Lafia Township Stadium. Both Gombe United and Remo Stars were confounded to relegation before the match-day 38 games.
Gombe United lost 0-1 to Wikki Tourists at home in a bizarre circumstance after Maurice Chigozie scored an own goal in the 23rd minute, the goal aided Wikki to escape relegation. Remo Stars alos lost 0-1 to Sunshine Stars FC at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu.
